Our 2014 Season – The Grid Edge
The electricity industry is on the cusp of a dramatic transformation, as the proliferation of distributed energy resources and customer energy management solutions necessitates complex and wide-reaching changes to power infrastructure, market design and business models. Increasing customer adoption of distributed generation, microgrids, energy storage and demand response presents an unprecedented opportunity for utilities, technology providers, third-party energy providers and customers to create a sustainable, digital, interactive and efficient power network.
Like many areas of innovation and transformation in adjacent markets, this activity plays out at the boundary, or edge, of traditional, stable and well-understood territories. This is what the industry is coming to know as the grid edge.
For our 2014 season, Clean Energy Connections is producing a special year-long series with Greentech Media. Each event will highlight one layer of the transformation occurring at the grid edge. The four events this year are:
The Expansion of Distributed PV in the Age of the Grid Edge, Tuesday, March 4, 2014
The Age of Intelligent Storage: Distributed Systems, Smart Software and Control Systems, Wednesday, May 14, 2014
Energy Entrepreneurship Twitter Chat, Thursday, July 10, 2014
The Utility Business Model; Evolution or Revolution?, Monday, September 22, 2014
Grid Edge Analytics: Advances in Big Data, Intelligent Software and Analytics Behind the Meter, Wednesday, November 5, 2014
The grid edge represents a complex, yet exciting road ahead. The taxonomy diagram above attempts to define the various technology layers and individual market segments that will shape this world going forward. The top plane of the diagram outlines opportunities that will present themselves in this new landscape. For more information, visit http://www.greentechmedia.com/gridedge .
